Riding the End of the World Train Without a Tour

Do you need a tour to ride the End of the World Train? How a train-only ticket works with a taxi, a rental car or a park minibus, what happens at Estación Parque Nacional, the park fee, and when a combined tour is still the easier day.

Updated November 2026

You do not need a tour to ride the End of the World Train. Buy the railway’s own End of the World Train Tickets, Turista Class (from $50 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.8 from 20 reviews), get yourself to Estación Fin del Mundo 8 km west of Ushuaia, and check in 45 minutes before your train. Before you pay for the ticket, plan two things: the ride back to town, and how you will see Tierra del Fuego National Park, because the train does not take you to its main sights.

Going on your own suits you if you:

  • have a rental car
  • want to choose your own departure
  • only want the railway
  • have already seen Tierra del Fuego National Park
  • would rather not join a group

The train is only one part of the area. Riding independently, you still need to sort out how to reach the station, how the round-trip ticket fits your plan, how you will continue into the national park if you want to, and how you will get back to Ushuaia.

Can you book the End of the World Train without a tour?

Yes. The railway sells train-only tickets on its own website, at the station ticket office when seats are left, and through the Turista ticket listing on GetYourGuide. The Turista fare is ARS 80,000 per adult from October 2026 to March 2027; our tickets and prices guide has every class and the child rates.

A train-only visit works best if you want to keep the railway separate from the rest of your day, or if you already have transport.

Where does the train leave from?

From Estación Fin del Mundo, on Ruta Nacional 3 at km 3065, about 8 km from central Ushuaia and 1 km before the national park gate. The railway runs no shuttle. You can get there:

  • in your own or a rented car (parking at the station is free)
  • by taxi, remis or Uber
  • on the park minibuses from the corner of Av. Maipú and Juana Fadul
  • with an agency transfer, when one is running

Walking along the highway is not practical. Our guide to getting to the station covers each option step by step, with the return and the cruise-port details; this page is about whether you need a tour at all.

Option 1: Visit independently by rental car

A rental car is the easiest way to do it yourself, because you control the day before and after the ride. A good self-drive day runs:

Ushuaia → Estación Fin del Mundo → train → Tierra del Fuego National Park by car → Lake Acigami → Lapataia Bay → Ushuaia

It works best from spring to autumn. From June to August you need snow tires or chains, and winter driving on the park roads can be difficult.

Why a rental car works so well

The train stops at Estación Parque Nacional, inside the park but well short of its best-known sights. With a car, you can continue on your own to:

  • Lake Acigami
  • Lapataia Bay
  • Ensenada Zaratiegui (closed in the winter season)
  • viewpoints along the park road
  • short walking trails

You set the pace, not a group. One thing to know: every ticket is a round trip, so you ride back to Estación Fin del Mundo, pick up the car there and then drive into the park.

Option 2: Park minibus or agency transfer from Ushuaia

The railway does not run a shuttle, and there is no official transfer timed to every train. Park minibuses leave from the corner of Av. Maipú and Juana Fadul, and the railway lists regular transport among the ways to reach the station; confirm with the driver that the bus stops at the train station and ask about the last return. Some agencies in town sell a transfer to the station on some dates, so ask at the tourist office whether one is running on yours.

These options suit you if:

  • you only want the train
  • you are staying in central Ushuaia
  • you are visiting by cruise ship and have plenty of time
  • you do not want to arrange a taxi

You have to work around the bus or transfer times, and the return has to match the end of your ride.

Option 3: Taxi or remis

A taxi is the other easy choice. The station is only about 8 km from the city, so the ride is short and direct, and the fare splits well between two or more people. Agree the price before you set off.

A taxi suits you if:

  • you are traveling as a couple or a small group
  • you want a specific train departure
  • the minibus or transfer times do not fit
  • you want to go straight from your hotel to the station

The return is the part people forget. Arrange it before you board, because a car will not necessarily be waiting when you get back to the station.

Should you book a one-way or return ticket?

There is no one-way fare. The railway says every ticket includes the full round trip, so the choice is about how you use it, not which ticket you buy.

Riding there and back

This is the usual plan. It suits you if:

  • you only want the train
  • your car is parked at Estación Fin del Mundo, or your taxi is coming back there
  • you are not exploring the national park straight afterwards

Getting off at Estación Parque Nacional

You can leave the train at the park station. It suits you if:

  • someone with a car is meeting you there, the way the combined tours do
  • you want to walk the trails near the station and come back on a later train

Coming back on a later train is allowed at no extra cost, subject to seats. From September to April you can ride out in the morning or at midday, walk near the station and return on the 16:00 train; keep your ticket, because you need it to board again. In winter the railway recommends riding straight back, because the nearby trails are closed in bad weather. You cannot start a ride at Estación Parque Nacional: boarding happens only at the main station.

Choose whichever fits the way you are getting around.

What happens at the far end of the railway?

The train reaches Estación Parque Nacional and waits there for 10 to 15 minutes before the return run. This is where independent travelers need to be careful: the line does not go on to the park’s headline sights. You still need road transport for:

  • Lapataia Bay
  • Lake Acigami
  • Ensenada Zaratiegui

Arrive at the far end without a plan and you may have fewer options than you expected. Our stations and stops guide describes what is at each stop.

Can you just walk into the national park from the train?

Not as a substitute for transport. Tierra del Fuego National Park has walking trails near the station, but the headline sights are spread out along the road. For a proper park day, use:

  • a rental car
  • a private driver
  • an organized tour

The railway is not hop-on public transport for the park.

Is independent travel cheaper?

Sometimes. It depends on what you already have. With a rental car, a train-only ticket can cost less than a tour.

If you have to pay for:

  • a taxi both ways
  • the train ticket
  • the park entry
  • extra transport inside the park

the gap between doing it yourself and a combined tour shrinks quickly. The park fee is ARS 40,000 for foreign visitors and every rider needs it, even if you never leave the train. A combined tour such as the Tierra del Fuego National Park Tour, Train Optional (from $52, rated 4.8 from 505 reviews) adds hotel pickup and a guide; the train costs extra on its “With train included” option, and the park fee is extra too.

Compare the total cost of the day, not only the train fare.

Is independent travel better for photographers?

Often, yes. A rental car lets you:

  • stop longer
  • go back to a viewpoint
  • wait for better light
  • avoid tour timing
  • spend more time in the park

The train keeps to its timetable, but the rest of the day becomes yours.

Is independent travel better for families?

It can be. Families often like:

  • flexible breaks
  • choosing their own food stops
  • leaving early
  • not waiting for a group

A rental car helps most with younger children. A combined tour may still be easier if you do not want to manage transport. Our guide to the train with kids has the child fares and practical tips.

Is independent travel better for cruise passengers?

Usually only on a long port call. Cruise passengers have less room for error, and a combined shore excursion with pickup gives you a more predictable day. If you go on your own, leave a large buffer before all-aboard. Our guide for cruise passengers has the port-day timings.

What if you do not speak Spanish?

You can still go independently. The railway is easy for visitors, with an audio guide in 10 languages on board. A guide adds more in the national park, though, so if you want someone to explain what you are seeing as well as drive you, an organized tour may suit you better.

What should you book in advance?

If you are going on your own, book:

  1. the train ticket
  2. a rental car or transfer, if you need one
  3. the national park entry, ARS 40,000 for foreign visitors, at ventaweb.apn.gob.ar
  4. your return ride, if you are using a taxi or remis

The train is the most time-sensitive part because the departure times are fixed: 9:30, 12:00 and 15:00 from September to April, and 9:45, 12:30 and 15:00 from May to August. The city tourist office notes that agency groups usually take the morning trains, so the midday and afternoon trains can have more room. The full End of the World Train schedule has the extra departures and the station hours.

How early should you arrive?

Reach the station at least 45 minutes before departure. The railway requires check-in, which is where your ticket is printed and your seats are confirmed, and it closes 10 minutes before the train leaves; after that your booking can be released to the waiting list. Allow for:

  • check-in
  • collecting your printed ticket
  • the station facilities
  • boarding
  • delays on the road

Do not cut it close.

Best independent itinerary

A good self-drive day:

Morning

  • leave Ushuaia
  • drive to Estación Fin del Mundo
  • ride the train

Late morning and early afternoon

  • drive into Tierra del Fuego National Park
  • Lake Acigami
  • Lapataia Bay
  • short walks

Afternoon

  • return to Ushuaia
  • lunch or sightseeing in town

This covers much the same ground as a combined tour, with more control over your time. The one-day Ushuaia itinerary shows how to fit it around the rest of a day in town.

Best independent itinerary without a car

Without a car, the simplest plan is:

Ushuaia → taxi, minibus or transfer → train → return train → ride back to Ushuaia

That covers the train only. Adding the full national park without a car is much harder.

When is a combined tour better?

Choose a tour if:

  • this is your first visit
  • you want the park as well
  • you do not want to drive
  • you want a guide
  • you are short on time
  • you are visiting in winter
  • you are arriving by cruise ship

The National Park & End of the World Train Tour (from $50, rated 4.5 from 1,212 reviews) is the most reviewed of them; which tour is right for you compares the options on price, pickup and time in the park.

When is independent travel better?

Go on your own if:

  • you have a rental car
  • you dislike group tours
  • you want longer photo stops
  • you already know the area
  • you only want the railway
  • you like to plan your own day

Frequently asked questions

Can you ride the End of the World Train without a tour?

Do you need a rental car?

No, but it makes the day much easier if you also want to see Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Can you take a taxi?

Yes. Agree the fare first and arrange the ride back before you board.

Is there an official transfer to the station?

The railway runs none. Park minibuses leave from Av. Maipú and Juana Fadul, and some agencies sell a transfer on some dates; check that its times fit your train.

Can you buy a one-way ticket?

No. Every ticket is a round trip. You can get off at Estación Parque Nacional if someone meets you there, or come back on a later train when seats allow.

Can you visit the national park afterwards?

Yes, but you need road transport to reach Lake Acigami and Lapataia Bay.

Is independent travel cheaper?

It can be, especially if you already have a car.

Is a tour better for first-time visitors?

Usually, yes, because the transport, the train timing and the park stops are arranged for you.

The bottom line

Visiting the End of the World Train on your own is easy if you plan the transport first. The simplest plans are:

  • train-only ticket + taxi
  • train-only ticket + park minibus or agency transfer
  • train + rental car + your own day in the national park

The common mistake is buying the train ticket first and only later working out how to reach the station or continue into the park. Plan the whole day before you buy.

With a rental car and a liking for flexible travel, going independently works very well. For the easiest first visit, a combined train and national park tour is still the simpler choice. Our train vs national park comparison helps if you are deciding whether you need both, and if you have time left in Ushuaia, the train versus Martial Glacier comparison looks at the mountain above town.
