Tierra del Fuego National Park begins about 11 km west of Ushuaia. It was created in 1960, covers 68,909 hectares, and is described by the parks service as the only national park in Argentina that combines sea coast and mountains. Most tours spend a morning here, following Route 3 through lenga forest to the places the park is known for.

Lapataia Bay is where the park tours on this site finish their drive. It is where National Route 3, the Argentine end of the Pan-American Highway, stops at a sign that gives the distances to Buenos Aires and Alaska. Boardwalks run along the bay, and the short Mirador Lapataia trail climbs to a viewpoint in about 30 minutes.

Lago Acigami is the big glacial lake, formerly Lago Roca and still sold under that name on most tours. Ensenada Zaratiegui is a cove on the Beagle Channel with a small post office that has become a landmark; it is often closed, and two tour operators describe it as no longer operating. One of them also notes that its tours reach Ensenada Zaratiegui only from about mid-October to mid-May, and that winter tours spend the time at other viewpoints.

The Alakush visitor centre, beside the lake, has a cafeteria and restaurant open daily from 10:00 to 17:30, and it is the usual break stop. Many tours also point out a beaver dam: beavers were brought from North America and now cause serious damage to the forest, which the short Castorera trail shows up close.

Park fees and opening hours

Every visitor pays the national park fee, and no standard tour includes it. Since 1 June 2026 the fee is ARS 40,000 for foreign visitors, ARS 18,000 for Argentines and ARS 12,000 for Argentine students. Children up to 6 enter free. A second visit within 72 hours is half price, but in this park only on tickets bought online, so the online sale from the national parks service is the easier route.

Opening hours change with the season: 8:00 to 21:00 from December to February, 8:00 to 20:00 in March, October and November, and 9:00 to 18:00 from April to September.

Trails for a longer day

A standard tour gives you short walks at each stop. The park’s marked trails go further. The Senda Costera follows the coast for 8 km, about four hours, from Ensenada Zaratiegui toward Lago Acigami, and opens only from November to April. Cerro Guanaco is the hard one, 6 km each way with a last entry at 12:30, also November to April only. Paseo de la Isla (1.3 km) and Mirador Lapataia (just under 1 km) take about half an hour each and stay open all year. The Laguna Negra boardwalk is under repair.

Where the End of the World Train fits in

The train starts at the End of the World Station, 1 km before the park gate, and runs 7 km into the park. Park tours that include it drop you at the station, you ride one way with a 20-minute stop at La Macarena, and the guide meets you at Estación Parque Nacional inside the park.
